Abbey Cross

Jerpoint Abbey, County Kilkenny, Republic of Ireland, Europe
08/2005

High crosses are famous attributes of Ireland (as well as Scotland). This one here is not really a high cross, but a gravestone at Jerpoint Abbey. But it's featuring the typical style of the celtic (Irish) cross with the high cross beam (therefore high cross) and a broad ring at the intersection of the bars, as well as round cut-outs at this point. This cross tilted fairly wide, but had bright red flowers standing in front of it. A thrilling center of attraction in the all-grey environment of stone walls, crosses and brasses. At this point I was asked by the custody, if I was a proffessional photographers because of my gear - a most welcome and appreciated comment. And luckily I'm not - as I wouldn't have been allowed continuing to take pictures then …
