Sightings in Other Areas
Another calf (see above) for Moose Lady Lotta at the wildlife park in Germany almost exactly one year later—and again for Mother's Day!

We have a cabin located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. On July 14, 2011 we were fortunate to be treated to the following moose sighting right out our front door! What an amazing experience! Alex.
Our Moose Lady Lotta at the nearby wildlife park in Germany has born twins again!
The calves saw the light of day this Sunday morning (May 15, 2011) at around 8.00 am. I had a chance to see them in the same afternoon—it is so amazing how fast the two moose babies are up on their legs—even shakily though.
The two bull moose—the father of the two calves and the yearling from last year—were displaced to the very other corner of the large enclosure well knowing that a moose cow is very protective after birth (although I realized it gets less critical year by year).
The two bulls were lying in exactly the same position side by side, and I was overtaken by the feeling that both even had the same irritated thoughts and feelings.
The park is called "Wildpark Hundshaupten" and is located in Franconian Switzerland, as the region is called. You can see the location on Google maps here.
Lotta is the name of the moose cow, who has given birth to the twins. I call her my "Moose Lady," as I know her for many years now, from the time she came into the park. Stefan.

This big boy was enjoying my evergreen shrubs in Hamilton, Montana. Karen. (Ed. Good thing the window was just cleaned!)
"Today (September 30, 2010) I was driving to get my daughter from school, and I saw a bull moose, quite large, walking down Miller Hill Road in Hopewell Junction, New York. He sauntered across the road and into a neighbor's driveway and headed back up the hill. I wish I had taken a picture, but I was too surprised! Hope he comes back! Sally.
"While horseback riding with a couple of friends today (July 18, 2010) in the Douglas State Forest in Massachusetts, a moose walked out of the woods and across the trail right in front of us. I never expected to see a moose in Douglas. Linda."
"This pretty moose has been walking in this field for four days in New Braintree, Massachusetts. Tons of cars stop and people get out and watch and she watches back. Hannah."
"My wife Leah and I were on our porch in Palmer, Massachusetts when we spotted a young bull across the road making his way across a field. So we jumped in our Jeep and managed to get a photo of him making his way towards the main road. Chris."

"This picture was taken near Paradise, Michigan in the Upper Peninsula. These two moose I spotted were near the road, watching everyone very closely. They posed for about 20 minutes while everyone that was driving by, stopped to take their photo."
"I live in Fishkill, New York, an area where I never thought I would see a moose, but today, October 16, my husband and I saw a huge moose running through a field just down the road from our house. It stopped and looked at us for awhile and then went back into the woods. Barbara-Ann."
"This past week we spotted a moose in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We were driving on Michigan highway 123, about two miles south of the town of Paradise, when we spotted the moose standing by the road. We had been vacationing in the area all week and looking for moose in all the obvious places (marshy areas, backcountry areas) with no luck. So we were very surprised to look up and see the moose standing by the highway! At first, the moose seemed startled by our car and ran back into the shrubs, so we parked along the roadside and just waited. Within a couple of minutes, the moose came back out, crossed the road, and continued eating leaves off of the trees. If a car drove by, it would stop and look for a moment, but then would go back to eating. We were so excited to have this close encounter since we had never seen a moose so closely before! Leslie."
"Early this afternoon [May 2006] as I was finishing up teaching a voice lesson to one of my adult students, I looked out my studio window, only to see a large moose walking by. She was accompanied by another moose, both of whom sauntered by closely followed by a police car. They calmly walked past our house (in a manufactured housing development in residential Pullman, Washington) and down the path to the bus stop where my son catches the school bus. They then walked across the busy highway, and into the fields across from our housing development.
This isn't the first time, either! My older son once followed a young bull moose up our street in a car—verrrry slowly! Carolyn."
"The moose last seen in East Fishkill, New York was here in Kent, New York yesterday (December 9, 2006). Named "Alice" by our neighborhood columnist, Lynn Greenwood, Alice literally stopped traffic on Farmers Mills Rd. We hope this girl moves north and finds a partner soon—it's going to be a cold winter! Sue."
"As I was driving home this evening I noticed an animal running down the road in front of my car. At first I thought it was a deer and then secondly a horse which wouldn't be at all unusual since I live about two hours out of New York City in an area called Smithfield Valley in Amenia, New York, proudly known for its fox hunting and large country horse farms. Horses are always getting loose, however, as I drove behind my fury friend, my car lights shone on its rear end and I noticed it was missing that familiar swishing tail and its ears stuck out so, I thought ... is this a big donkey?
As you can imagine moose just never entered my mind. I followed the animal slowly down the paved road as it kept up quite a frisky gait. As I got closer it turned several times looking back at me like a runner in a race; then I saw it! The unmistakable profile of ... Bullwinkle. I really thought I was seeing things. What is ironic is that my mom is from Berlin New Hampshire and I have heard stories about moose and sightings up there all my life. With all the time I've spent there on vacations to my Grandmother's not once had I ever laid eyes on a real live moose. Well that all changed tonight! My moose friend and I spent probably no more than a minute together, then he/she (it didn't have antlers) suddenly turned into a grassey road and trotted off into the woods seeming like it knew exactly where it was going. I couldn't wait to get home to Google the word "moose;" this is how I found your Web site. Your pictures proved that I did indeed see a moose in Dutchess County N.Y. Laurina."
"My name is Rebecca and have I recently stumbled upon your Web site, while trying to prove to my boyfriend that I in fact did see a moose out in my backyard. I found no research to prove my sighting to him, but your Web site has encouraged me to share my personal experience.
I live in a tiny house on a long road in Bartonsville, Pennsylvania. I am surrounded by a huge forest and usually see nothing but pesky squirrels eating out of my bird feeders. Although, back in December (2004) we received about a foot of snow, and while I was outside admiring the scenery, I glimpsed over to a certain part of my relatively large backyard and curiously stared at a very large creature. It was quite still, and quietly it stared back. Although the falling snow created a some what foggy scene, I attempted to focus on the creature a lot more. I'm not embarrassed to say this at all, but I was extremely frightened. A completely weird feeling came over me and although I wasn't exactly sure what it was that seemed to be patiently standing behind my apple tree, I made my way a bit closer. This time I was close enough to see around my tree, and discover that it was a huge moose! I never even saw such a creature up close in a zoo or anything! I found it absolutely fascinating and magical! It looked absolutely beautiful standing mysteriously in the snow. I couldn't believe my eyes! And although it was quite a few years back I still remember like it was yesterday.
The research I found states that moose do not occupy my area at all, but what I saw was no deer! Big antlers (according to my research I believe it might have been a bull moose), and HUGE body. If there's any other sightings in PA that you have read about I would be more than pleased to hear about them, and it would really help me believe in my past situation more. And if what I saw was just a small deer or my imagination, I at least got a small taste of what I long to experience.
Sadly, no one was with me to experience the magic, and I have nothing but a memory to describe. If only my boy friend wasn't so stubborn ... . Rebecca."
Stafford, Connecticut: "I got an email from a friend who lives a few miles away to tell me a big bull moose was hit by a van and ran into the woods. No one has been able to find it. I was telling her how lucky she was to have a moose go through her yard when I looked out the window and saw a cow coming up from my back pasture. She stopped and looked up the driveway, then changed her mind and trotted back into the forest. In 20 years of living here, I have never even seen tracks on the property, although I have seen them in the adjacent state forest. I think they are here to stay! Ingrid."
"My family and I were settling in last evening (April 2007, Averill Park, New York) and heard a commotion outside. Cars were parked up and down our street and a State Trooper was pulled over to the side of the road as well. We thought at first it was just speeders. Well was I wrong. I went to the front door and across the street in an open field chewing on a crabapple tree was a young bull moose. We have never seen one and what a beautiful animal it is. The trooper tried "pushing" it back into the wooded area so he didn't get hit, but he was back again this morning, munching on the same crabapple tree. I hope he finds his way back home soon! Dina."
"It was April Fool's Day, 2007, but this was no joke. My 6-year-old son and I were driving on a remote tree-lined road in Copake, NY (Columbia County), maybe two miles from our house. About 50 yards ahead of us, a mass of brown fur and long legs was trotting across the road. My son is in first grade, and neither of us have ever seen anything like it, but both of us— simultaneously and instantly—knew what it was: a moose (female for sure). We watched her trot down a hill into thick woods, and by the time I'd turned the car around and gone back to the spot, we had only a glimpse of her left as she loped up another hill into heavy tree cover.
Our yells of surprise might have helped her make tracks out of there—we have never even heard of a moose sighting anywhere in our vicinity (just west of the southern tips of the Berkshires).
An hour later, I was telling the tale at a local hardware store, where the owner pretended to grab the phone and said, "I wanna call somebody to see what you've been drinking." Another local who was listening said flatly, "No way. Not this far south."
This was akin to a UFO sighting. We know what we saw, and we stand by our story. Probably the most phenomenal wildlife sighting of my life. A camera definitely would have come in handy. Tom.
"This past summer I was driving through the forest in Troy, Oregon and nearly hit a moose. I was unable to get a picture before it disappeared into the woods, but all of us in the vehicle were completly sure that we saw a moose. I spoke with locals who agreed that they had moose in the area, but said they were very rare. The the internet, I was able to find an artical on moose in the Northeast corner of Oregon. The article described the exact appearance and location that we were in. I'm very glad to be one of the few people to see a moose in Oregon. Emily."
"On January 20, 2007, I was driving home to Devils Lake, North Dakota from Webster, North Dakota and noticed that the female moose was in the cornfield again! I (and many other people) had been seeing this same moose in the cornfield for about a month now. She must really like this spot, because she is there quite frequently. I have never seen a moose up close, and decided to drive down the gravel farm road that was parallel to the cornfield, so I could get a better look at the moose. I sat in my car for a few minutes with my window rolled down, and watched the magnificent animal eat. Slowly, she started to stroll closer to my car, and she came within 10 feet of my window!! I was getting a little nervous by that point, since you can never predict what a wild animal will do, so I pulled forward a little, and then decided I should leave her in peace. It was so amazing though, to see her so close! Beautiful creature! Christi."
"We have a bull moose here in the small town of Monico, Wisconsin. There has been occasional sightings in the last few years, but now he has been seen in the same watering hole for three days now (April 2009) and its drawing a big crowd. I hope that the visitors will respect his area. He is a big beautiful creature and so majestic. We really enjoy watching him. Jodi."
"One evening my husband and I were awakened by a cacophony of Barred owls. My husband mentioned he thought he had heard a moose! Well, here in Granby, Massachusetts that would really be something. The next day, my neighbor called and said there was a moose sighting right across the street! I called my husband to let him know—he was right! On the way home from work today, he happened to look over into a field on our street and lo and behold, a bull moose standing right there. Awesome. Beth."
"We have a cabin on a lake in the southern most side of the Western Upper Pennisula, Michigan (Watersmeet). Last weekend I was doing some fall cleanup outside the cabin—it was about 10am when I looked up and there about maybe 100 feet or so in front of me came two moose walking through the woods. I don't think that they had seen me yet, but unfortunately because it was so unexpected—it scared me and I wanted my husband to see them so I ran and yelled for my husband to come out. Of course they ran off. My husband did get to see them and somewhat followed where they went, we tried to track them on our four wheeler but could not find them. We had heard that there were no moose in our area, only up by Lake Superior; I guess we heard wrong. We have only owned our cabin for three years and we are constantly amazed at the wildlife; it's like living in Yellowstone! I must say moose was one of the last things I thought we'd see in our yard. I now look forward to my next sighting! Linda."
"Ludlow, Massachusetts: On the morning of June 11, 2008 as I got ready for work I passed my bay window in my kitchen and there was an extremely large male moose looking at me though the window. My dog happened to be following me around as usual and saw him immediately (he was tough to miss). The mooose then half-heartedly trotted away into my backyard and back into the woods as my rough and tough dog barked. I don't think he was impressed; however, it was very exciting for me considering it was my first face-to-face encounter. If only I had him around a moment longer I would have gotten a snap shot. Greatfull for the once in a life time sighting! Jamie Lee."
"I was riding home with coworkers from our job on Vassar Ave. in Poughkeepsie, New York and we were again mis-directed by our rental car agency-provided GPS. This was around dusk about a week and a half ago (it's Memorial Day weekend now), and I saw a moose standing by a pond on somebody's land! I know this is a bit south for moose, but read that they exist in northern NY and their numbers have been growing. I'm from Kwntucky, where obviously we don't have them (yet), so this was quite a fascinating experience! I am guessing that it was a younger male, probably pushed out of its origin by larger ones. It wasn't HUGE compared to the horses I'm used to, and its rack wasn't massive. I'm completely obsessed with the moose now... Elaine."
Glenburn North Dakota,4 Miles North of Minot AFB: Coming home from Minot headed west to our house, my husband, son and I saw a cow with her baby in the tree rows just east of our home. Friends had told us about seeing moose in towns north us of but we were very suprised to see them that close to our home. It will be interesting to see how close she stays. Holly."
"My family and I took a trip to Alta, Montana, and the first thing we saw the next morning was a moose with her baby. We watched in amazement as she and her baby were feeding on vegetation at the bottom of a pond. The next day we saw her again, and the day we were leaving we saw a bull moose. If you ever want a "perfect vacation" Alta Meadow Ranch is the one to take. I am now hooked on moose and bears, I have turned my bedroom into a "wilderness hideout," and my husband says he now sees moose in his dreams! And now I have found Mooseworld, and know I am not alone! Keep up the info, we love the stories!"
"My wife and I have been vacationing in northern Minnesota, along the north shore of Lake Superior and the Boundary Water Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW), for several years. On a recent visit to the BWCAW, we took a drive in the early morning hours during late September and caught a glimpse of a moose down an old logger's trail. We stopped and backed up, and sure enough, a large bull was standing down the trail enjoying the early morning, just as we certainly did. No pictures, but a great memory!

"My daughters and I traveled to the western states last spring from the midwest to see the Rockies. I've been a moose fanatic for a while now, but I had never seen one in the wild. We were staying in West Yellowstone, Montana and visiting Yellowstone Park daily, while I secretly hoped for just one moose sighting. To my surprise, on a snowy morning while driving on the outskirts of town, we saw a beautiful cow moose in a field near the highway as she was grazing in the snow. I was absolutely thrilled! I couldn't believe that I finally saw a wild moose. We were so happy that we just sat in our car for a while, watching her graze, while she totally ignored us. It was great!
After that sighting, I told my daughters it would be nice to see a bull next! I thought we had been lucky just to see one moose, and that would be the end of it. But only two days later, while driving along the highway in Wyoming, we saw a wild bull moose frolicking at the edge of some woods! He was so funny! We stopped along the highway, a good distance from him yet he was in full view, and watched. He'd graze a bit, then he'd run around some bushes and then take a running start and jumped over the bush! He was like a puppy playing and acting like the happiest animal in the world. We again sat and watched till he eventually disappeared into the woods.
That was the best trip ever, two moose in two days! Thanks Montana and Wyoming! Eve."
"Yesterday I spotted a large animal in the woods. I thought it must be a large deer. It was a moose. I never had seen a moose before and he was huge, slow moving and alone. I often throw out apples and carrots and such to the deer that live in the woods in back of my house. Maybe thats why the moose appeared I don't know. He was chestnut brown in color and flat long finger like antlers.
I spoke softly to him and he looked right at me then continued to eat. He was the size of a horse. He did not seem to be afraid of me but I was respectful of staying the 15 foot distance that we had between us. He turned away and walked into the woods. I hope to photograph him if I ever get to see him again. He was seen in a wooded area located on Route 62, Princeton, Massachusetts. Carol."
"My partner and I were hiking down an abandoned railroad grade in Minnesota's Great Northwoods. We stepped off the railroad grade briefly to examine the year's blueberry shrubs on a small hill. When we stepped back down onto the grade, we spotted a beautiful dark brown moose walking down the grade ahead of us, about 40 yards away. We could see the whitish hair near the rear and the white on the lower legs. My partner noticed the moose was growing antlers! We walked quietly behind the moose for a minute, after which the moose moose gently turned off the grade, through a swamp and into the forest beyond. It was a short but sweet sighting. Shawn."
